Under this regulation, a Sworn Translator is defined as an individual with expertise in producing translations who has been appointed and sworn in by the Minister responsible for governmental affairs in the legal sector and is registered with the relevant ministry. The regulation also establishes the responsibility of Sworn Translators for the accuracy and quality of their translations.

In practice, sworn translations are used for various types of official documents, including educational, administrative, corporate, and legal documents. The Directorate General of Legal Administrative Affairs (Direktorat Jenderal Administrasi Hukum Umum/Ditjen AHU) also identifies documents such as court decisions, notarial deeds, agreements, birth certificates, marriage certificates, and academic certificates as examples of documents that may require sworn translation.

However, one important point should be emphasized: not every official document automatically requires a sworn translation. The requirement depends on the purpose of the document, its type, the destination country, and the requirements of the receiving institution or authority. Therefore, before ordering a translation service, clients should first confirm what type of translation is required by the intended recipient.

Minister of Law Regulation No. 4 of 2025 emphasizes that Sworn Translators bear full responsibility for the accuracy and quality of their translations and are required to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

The Directorate General of Legal Administrative Affairs also places the profession within a broader context involving legal documents, administrative matters, diplomacy, and international cooperation. In 2025, the Directorate General of Legal Administrative Affairs reported the appointment of 29 new Sworn Translators and stated that, at that time, 176 Sworn Translators had been appointed, with qualifications covering various language combinations and translation directions. These developments demonstrate the role of Sworn Translators in supporting official communication across languages, particularly as international interactions continue to grow.

Preparing Documents for Global Opportunities

Education, careers, and international business may appear to be three distinct areas. However, they share one fundamental requirement: the ability to communicate accurate information across linguistic and national boundaries.

Sworn translation can play an important role when official documents need to be translated in accordance with the requirements of the receiving party.
